Le Chat, now Mistral Vibe: our full 2026 review

4.2/5 Free, then $14.99/month Hosted in Europe Coding agent included

Le Chat is the only assistant in this comparison whose data stays in Europe, built by a French company. That is not a cosmetic argument: for a law firm, a public body or any organisation bound by data-location rules, it is often the criterion that settles the question before answer quality even comes up. Mistral has also just renamed the product Mistral Vibe and folded in a coding agent, which changes the scope considerably. We used it for several weeks to find out what that is worth day to day.

Verdict: the strongest European option, now a genuine working agent

Le Chat is far more than a political argument. Answers arrive faster than at any rival, the interface is clean, the paid plan is the cheapest here, and European hosting settles a contractual question that stalls a great many AI projects. The move to Mistral Vibe adds a coding agent usable in the terminal and the editor, scheduled tasks and more than a hundred connectors. In exchange the rename muddies the signposting, the partner ecosystem is younger than the American giants’, and new features usually land in English first.

Go for it if

  • European data location is a contractual or regulatory requirement for you.

  • You want the cheapest subscription without dropping writing quality.

  • You want an assistant and a coding agent inside one subscription.

Look elsewhere if

  • You work on demanding technical projects where Claude keeps a clear lead.

  • You depend on an integration catalogue as wide as the American giants’.

  • You want documentation and support that always ship in your language first.

What is Le Chat exactly?

Le Chat is the conversational assistant from Mistral AI, a French company founded in 2023 that became Europe’s leading generative AI player in remarkably little time. You reach it from a browser, from mobile apps and, since 2026, from a terminal and code editor plugins.

First thing to know before you go looking for help online: the product has been renamed Mistral Vibe. The old Le Chat addresses redirect to the new brand and the documentation now says Vibe. The Le Chat name is still widely used, particularly in France, but the vendor has clearly turned the page.

The real difference is still location. Processing happens on European infrastructure, which completely changes the conversation with a data protection officer. Plenty of AI projects stall at exactly that step with American vendors, and Le Chat is the only assistant here that clears it without argument.

The second is speed. Mistral’s models are built for efficiency, and it shows: answers arrive almost instantly where rivals make you wait. Across a day made of dozens of short prompts, that comfort is not a detail.

What are Le Chat’s key features?

The foundation is classic and well executed: conversation, analysis of PDFs and office files, web search to keep answers current, image generation, and a voice mode that transcribes and summarises an audio recording.

Libraries let you upload your reference documents and query the whole set, with fifteen gigabytes on the Pro plan, which pushes the tool towards an internal knowledge base. Skills store reusable instructions and scripts for a recurring task, and task scheduling fires an agent at a set time, for a weekly watch or a recurring report.

The change that reshapes the product is the coding agent. It runs in the command line, in VS Code and in JetBrains, with completion, natural-language editing and background task execution. It is included in the Pro plan at no extra cost, which makes it one of the most aggressive propositions on the market at this price. On genuinely complex projects, Claude still keeps the lead.

On writing, Le Chat performs very well, with clean style and instructions that are respected. On short formats, emails, notes, meeting summaries, there is little to fix. On long and demanding prose, Claude stays ahead.

Le Chat is not trying to beat the Americans on their own ground. It wins on the one they cannot occupy: European hosting.

How much does Le Chat really cost?

The price list is simple, which is already a virtue next to what Google and Microsoft practise. A free tier, an individual plan, a team plan, a student rate and an enterprise contract.

PlanPriceWhat it covers
Free$0Limited messages, web searches and coding sessions, image generation
Education$5.99/monthVerified students at accredited institutions, 12 months maximum
Pro$14.99/monthHigher allowances, all-day coding agent, 15 GB library
Team$24.99/user/monthShared workspace, 30 GB per user, domain verification, data export
EnterpriseOn quotePrivate deployment, custom models and agents, audit logs, SSO

Prices excluding tax, checked on 3 August 2026 on the vendor’s pricing page and quoted in US dollars. Free-tier caps change: check the pricing page before subscribing.

At $14.99, Le Chat is the cheapest subscription here, roughly 25 % below ChatGPT and Claude. The gap gets more striking once you count what is included: the coding agent ships inside the Pro plan, where rivals usually make you move up a tier to get one you can run all day.

The Enterprise plan deserves a separate mention: it is the only one here offering deployment on your own infrastructure, with custom models and interface. For a regulated sector, healthcare, defence, government, that possibility is often worth more than ten points on a model leaderboard.

Who is Le Chat really for?

The first profile is the organisation with a data-location constraint. Law firms, accountants, public bodies, healthcare providers, suppliers under public contract: when transferring data outside the European Union requires an impact assessment, Le Chat removes the problem instead of documenting it.

The second profile is the budget-conscious small business. The price gap against American plans is real, and now that the coding agent ships inside the Pro plan, a small technical team can cover two needs with a single subscription.

The third is anyone firing off short prompts all day long. Answer speed creates a comfort that benchmarks do not measure but that you feel within the first hour.

Conversely, if you work on demanding technical projects or depend on a very wide integration catalogue, go to Claude or ChatGPT, both covered in our comparison.

What are the alternatives to Le Chat?

ChatGPT is the default choice if data location is not a topic where you work: more versatile, better equipped, with voice, images and agents.

Claude writes better on long formats and codes considerably better. If your deliverables are technical or editorial, the gap justifies the extra few dollars.

Gemini offers the most generous free tier and native integration with Gmail and Docs. It is the economical alternative, provided you accept American hosting.

As for Microsoft Copilot, it offers a European data boundary for business customers, which makes it the only other serious contender on compliance ground. The full comparison is here.

Our verdict: 4.2/5, the strongest European option

Frequently asked questions

Is Le Chat really hosted in Europe?

Yes. Mistral AI is a French company and Le Chat’s processing runs on European infrastructure, which avoids the impact assessment tied to transferring data outside the European Union. It is the only assistant in our comparison in that position, the others hosting in the United States apart from Microsoft’s enterprise options.

Why is Le Chat now called Mistral Vibe?

Mistral renamed its assistant in 2026 to match a change of scope: alongside the chat there is now an agent for long-running work and a coding agent usable in the terminal and the editor. The old addresses redirect to the new brand. The Le Chat name is still widely used, particularly in France, but the official documentation says Vibe.

Is Le Chat free?

A free tier exists with a capped number of messages, web searches and coding sessions, tighter than Gemini’s free tier. It is enough to form an accurate view of the product and for occasional use. The Pro plan at $14.99 per month lifts the main limits, price checked in August 2026.

Is Mistral’s coding agent as good as Claude’s?

It has improved a great deal and it is bundled into a $14.99 Pro plan, which is aggressive. On scripts, fixes and well-scoped tasks it does the job. On a complex project, a large codebase or long reasoning, Claude keeps a clear lead. The ratio of price to what you get still favours Mistral.

Can Le Chat be deployed on our own servers?

Yes, that is one of the arguments of Mistral’s Enterprise offer, with private deployment, custom models and interface, audit logs and single sign-on. No other vendor in our comparison offers it on the same terms. Pricing goes through a quote and depends on volume and the level of support.
