What you should know before you get started

A VPN encrypts your connection and hides your real IP address behind that of a remote server. It is a privacy and security tool, not a total anonymity tool: your VPN provider still sees your traffic pass through, which is why an audited no-logs policy and a favorable jurisdiction matter (Switzerland for Proton, Panama for NordVPN, the Netherlands for Surfshark, Romania for CyberGhost, the British Virgin Islands for ExpressVPN).

Is it legal? In the United States, the United Kingdom and across almost all of the European Union, using a VPN is perfectly legal. A VPN does not make an unlawful activity lawful: downloading copyrighted works via torrent remains illegal, even behind a VPN.

Abroad, be careful. Some countries restrict or ban unapproved VPNs (China, Russia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates in particular). In China, only state-approved VPNs are tolerated and the major consumer services are blocked by the national firewall: check the local rules before you travel.

Frequently asked questions about VPNs

What is the best VPN in 2026?

For most use cases, NordVPN and Proton VPN stand out (4.7/5 each): the first for performance and streaming, the second for privacy (Switzerland, open source) with an unlimited free plan. Surfshark remains the best value with its unlimited connections from $1.99/mo. The full ranking is in our best VPN 2026 comparison.

Is there a good free VPN?

Yes: Proton VPN offers the only serious free plan, with no data cap and no ads, funded by its paid subscriptions. Most other free VPNs impose quotas, ads or a questionable data policy. For streaming and maximum speed, a paid subscription is still required.

How much does a VPN cost?

On a 2-year commitment, expect roughly $2 to $3/mo from the leaders (Surfshark from $1.99, CyberGhost from $2.19, ExpressVPN from $2.79, NordVPN from $2.99). These are promotional rates: the price goes up at renewal, and a month-to-month plan often costs $10 to $13/mo. Indicative prices recorded in July 2026.

Does a VPN slow down my connection?

A little, and it is unavoidable: encryption and the detour through a remote server add latency. With the best services (NordVPN with NordLynx, ExpressVPN with Lightway, Proton VPN with WireGuard), the loss is small on a nearby server, often less than 10%. Choosing a geographically close server keeps the impact minimal.

Can a VPN unblock foreign Netflix catalogs?

Often, yes: by connecting to a server in the target country, you access its catalog. Streaming platforms actively fight this practice, so no VPN can guarantee permanent unblocking. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost are among the most reliable for streaming in 2026. Note that it may breach the platforms’ terms of service.
