Tor: anonymity in layers

Tor (The Onion Router) is not chasing the same goal. Where a VPN aims for security and privacy, Tor aims for anonymity. When you browse through the Tor Browser, your traffic is encrypted in several layers (hence the onion) and bounces across three successive relays run by volunteers around the world: an entry relay, a middle relay and an exit relay.

Your internet provider only sees that you use a VPN (not that you use Tor), and the Tor entry relay sees the VPN’s IP, not yours.
