Freshdesk review 2026: our full test, pricing and limits
Freshdesk was for years the obvious answer to the affordable help desk question: a free plan for up to ten agents, with no time limit, that few vendors dared to match. In 2026 that door closed, replaced by a six-month starter for one or two agents. We retested the product to say what it is worth now, against a Zoho Desk that has become markedly more generous.

Verdict: a very good product, but the free plan is no longer the argument
Freshdesk remains a complete and pleasant help desk: solid ticketing, a good knowledge base, workable automation, and omnichannel that covers email, chat, phone and social without contortions. It is a safe choice for an established support team. What changed in 2026 is the entry point: the long-standing free tier became an extended trial, and Freddy AI is billed on top of the seat.
What to remember
- The open-ended free plan became a six-month, one to two agent starter in 2026.
- Growth at $19 per agent, Pro at $55, Enterprise at $89, on annual billing.
- Freddy AI is charged in addition to the seat price.

What exactly is Freshdesk?
Freshdesk is the customer support product of Indian-American vendor Freshworks, launched in 2010. It belongs to the help desk category: tools that turn incoming requests, whatever the channel, into tickets that are assigned, tracked and measured.
Its reputation rested on two promises. First, easy onboarding, where Zendesk demanded serious configuration. Second, a generous free plan, long available for up to ten agents, which brought thousands of small teams into structured ticketing.
The second promise changed in 2026: the free offer became a six-month starter for one or two agents. That is an extended trial rather than a lasting entry point, and it completely reframes the comparison with Zoho Desk, whose three-agent free plan does not expire.

What are the key features of Freshdesk?
Ticketing is clean and effective: shared inbox, rule-based assignment, statuses, priorities, private notes, and collision detection when two agents open the same ticket. Service level agreements can be configured precisely, with automatic escalation when a target is missed.
Omnichannel is a genuine strength. Email, live chat, phone through Freshcaller, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram all land in the same queue with the customer’s history attached. Plenty of competitors advertise omnichannel and deliver juxtaposed channels; here the integration holds.
The knowledge base and customer portal let you publish help articles, with automatic article suggestions while an agent types. That is the highest-return lever in support: every question avoided costs less than every question handled. On the AI side, Freddy summarises threads, drafts replies and triages requests, but it is billed on top of the seat, which belongs in the budget.
Freshdesk lacks Zendesk’s depth and Zoho Desk’s price. It occupies the middle, and occupies it well, provided you accept paying from the first agent.

How much does Freshdesk cost?
Three paid tiers billed per agent per month, plus a free starter that is now time-limited.

| Plan | Indicative price | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Free starter | $0 | 6 months, 1 to 2 agents, core features |
| Growth | $19/agent/month | Automation, service levels, reporting |
| Pro | $55/agent/month | Multiple portals, custom reports, CSAT |
| Enterprise | $89/agent/month | Sandbox, audit logs, virtual agents |
Prices per agent per month on annual billing, checked on 3 August 2026. Freddy AI is billed separately. Freshworks grids moved during the year, so the official pricing page prevails.
For a four-agent team on Growth, budget around $76 a month, a little over $900 a year. The same team on Zoho Desk Standard comes to about $56 a month. The gap is modest at that level and becomes significant higher up, since Freshdesk Pro costs nearly four times Zoho’s Professional tier.
The step to watch is Growth to Pro: custom reporting and multiple portals, often considered essential past a certain size, sit behind it. Check which tier holds the two or three features you cannot do without before comparing entry prices.
Who is Freshdesk for?
Freshdesk suits established support teams, three to fifty agents, handling several channels and wanting a complete tool without the configuration project a Zendesk implies. Companies already running other Freshworks products gain extra coherence.
It suits a small business starting out less well: since 2026 there is no lasting free plan, and paying from the first agent changes the calculation when Zoho Desk offers three free agents with no time limit and Help Scout offers five.
What are the alternatives to Freshdesk?
Zoho Desk is the most direct alternative: comparable scope, three free agents and markedly lower prices. Help Scout for a small team that wants simplicity and a free five-user plan. Intercom if AI-first support and in-product messaging are the priority. Zendesk for the most complete platform.

Our verdict: 4.4/5, solid but no longer the value pick

Frequently asked questions
Is Freshdesk still free in 2026?
Not on a lasting basis. The long-standing free plan, once open to ten agents, was replaced by a six-month starter for one or two agents. Beyond that, the Growth plan starts at $19 per agent per month on annual billing, checked in August 2026. Zoho Desk still offers a permanent three-agent free plan.
What does Freshdesk cost for a team?
Budget around $76 a month for four agents on Growth with annual billing, a little over $900 a year. The Pro tier at $55 per agent takes the same team to $220 a month. Freddy AI is billed on top of the seat price.
Does Freshdesk really do omnichannel?
Yes, and it is one of its strengths. Email, live chat, phone, WhatsApp and social networks land in one ticket queue with the customer’s history attached, rather than in separate inboxes. That is a genuine differentiator against tools that merely juxtapose channels.
Freshdesk or Zoho Desk: which should you choose?
Zoho Desk wins on price, with comparable scope for roughly half the cost and a permanent three-agent free plan. Freshdesk keeps the edge on omnichannel quality, the customer portal and general ergonomics. If budget leads, Zoho; if agent comfort leads, Freshdesk.
