Zoho Desk review 2026: our full test, pricing and limits

MCThe MiisterSoftware team Updated August 2026 9 min read
4.4/5 Free for 3 agents Paid from $7/agent/month 55+ Zoho apps

Zoho Desk is the cheapest help desk in this comparison by a wide margin. Three free agents with no time limit, then tiers starting at seven dollars where competitors start at nineteen. The question is therefore not its price but what you give up to get there. We tested it to answer honestly, and to flag the ceiling many buyers discover only after subscribing.

4.4/ 5

Verdict: the best features-per-dollar ratio in customer support

Zoho Desk delivers full ticketing, a knowledge base, service level agreements and the Zia assistant at prices nobody here approaches, with a three-agent free plan that does not expire. It is the rational choice for a budget-conscious small or mid-sized business. In exchange, the interface is dense like every Zoho product, and the Express tier caps at five agents.

What to remember

  • A three-agent free plan with no time limit.
  • Express $7, Standard $14, Professional $23, Enterprise $40 per agent.
  • The trap to know: the Express tier caps at five agents.

What we liked

  • +

The lowest pricing in this comparison at comparable functional scope.

  • +

A three-agent free plan that does not expire, rare since Freshdesk retreated.

  • +

Ticketing, knowledge base, service levels and automation from the entry tier.

  • +

The Zia assistant is included rather than billed separately.

  • +

Native integration with the fifty-plus Zoho applications, starting with the CRM.

What could be better

  • The Express tier caps at five agents, forcing an earlier upgrade than the price suggests.

  • A dense interface, in line with other Zoho products.

  • Standard support answers more slowly than the American vendors.

  • Omnichannel is less fluid than Freshdesk’s on social networks.

Prices per agent per month on annual billing, checked on 3 August 2026. Monthly billing costs more. The five-agent cap on Express is the main cause of unplanned upgrades.

Go for it if

  • Budget is your first criterion and you accept a dense interface.

  • You already use other Zoho applications, starting with the CRM.

  • You are starting out and the three-agent free plan covers your needs.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want the most comfortable tool for your agents above all.

  • Your support runs mostly through social networks.

  • You expect to pass five agents soon without changing tier.

What exactly is Zoho Desk?

Zoho Desk is the customer support product of Indian vendor Zoho, which builds a suite of more than fifty business applications. Like the rest of the house, it follows one rule: deliver a functional scope comparable to the big American players at a markedly lower price.

In support, that means a three-agent free plan that does not expire, and a first paid tier at seven dollars per agent, where Freshdesk starts at nineteen and Zendesk at fifty-five. The gap is too large for a small organisation to ignore.

The trade-off is the same as elsewhere in the Zoho range: a dense interface, many options visible at once, and a real learning curve. Zoho does not sell comfort, it sells features per dollar.

What are the key features of Zoho Desk?

The free plan already covers email ticketing, the knowledge base, mobile apps and basic reporting for three agents. That is enough for a small team to stop running support from a plain shared mailbox.

Paid tiers open up service level agreements, automation and assignment rules, reply templates, the customer portal and multichannel handling. From Professional upward you also get multi-department tickets, agent collision detection and time tracking.

The Zia assistant is included rather than charged separately, unlike Freshdesk’s Freddy: sentiment analysis, knowledge base article suggestions and automatic triage. Finally, integration with Zoho CRM and the wider suite lets an agent see a customer’s commercial history from the ticket itself, with no connector to maintain.

Zoho Desk does not try to win your agents over in the first five minutes. It tries to give your finance director nothing to complain about after three years.

How much does Zoho Desk cost?

A free plan, then four paid tiers billed per agent per month.

PlanPriceWhat it adds
Free$03 agents, email ticketing, knowledge base
Express$7/agent/monthBasic automation, 5 agents maximum
Standard$14/agent/monthMultichannel, service levels, customer portal
Professional$23/agent/monthMulti-department, collision detection, time tracking
Enterprise$40/agent/monthAdvanced Zia, deep customisation, dashboards

Prices per agent per month on annual billing, checked on 3 August 2026. Monthly billing costs more. The five-agent cap on Express is not always obvious at signup.

The arithmetic is decisive for a four-agent team: around $56 a month on Standard, against $76 for Freshdesk Growth and $220 for Zendesk Suite Team. Over three years, the gap against Zendesk exceeds five thousand dollars for a team that size.

The real trap is therefore not the price but the five-agent cap on Express. Many subscribe at seven dollars, hire two people and discover they must move to Standard, doubling the per-agent rate. If you expect to pass five agents within the year, compare at the Standard level directly.

Who is Zoho Desk for?

Zoho Desk suits budget-conscious small and mid-sized businesses that want to structure support without a significant budget line. It becomes an obvious pick if you already run Zoho CRM, since the ticket and the customer record then live in one ecosystem.

It suits teams that put daily agent comfort ahead of cost less well, or whose support runs heavily through social networks, where Freshdesk is more polished. For a team that values simplicity above all, Help Scout is easier to live with.

What are the alternatives to Zoho Desk?

Freshdesk for smoother omnichannel and nicer ergonomics at a higher price. Help Scout for the simplest experience and a free five-user plan. Intercom if AI-first support is the priority. Zendesk if your organisation needs the most complete platform.

Our comparison of the best help desk software in 2026 prices all five for a typical team, and our guide to choosing help desk software sets out the method.

Our verdict: 4.4/5, unbeatable on price

If you are heading past five agents, compare at the Standard tier, not Express.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zoho Desk really free?

Yes, for up to three agents with no time limit. The free plan covers email ticketing, the knowledge base, mobile apps and basic reporting. It is now one of the few permanent free offers on the market, since Freshdesk turned its own into a six-month starter.

What is the catch with the Express tier?

Its five-agent cap. At seven dollars per agent per month it looks unbeatable, but from the sixth agent you must move to Standard at fourteen dollars, doubling the unit rate. If your team will grow within the year, compare at the Standard level directly.

Does Zoho Desk integrate with Zoho CRM?

Yes, natively and with no connector to maintain. From a ticket, the agent sees the customer’s commercial history, open deals and past exchanges. It is one of the most concrete arguments for the Zoho suite, and a common reason to pick Desk when the CRM is already in place.

Zoho Desk or Freshdesk: which should you choose?

Zoho Desk on budget, with comparable scope for roughly half the price and a permanent free tier. Freshdesk on agent comfort, customer portal quality and smoother omnichannel, particularly on social networks. For four agents, the annual gap is around two hundred and fifty dollars.

Ready to try Zoho Desk?

The three-agent free plan lets you structure your support without spending anything.
